Premier League powerhouse Liverpool officially announced on June 27, 2025 that goalkeeper Freddie Woodman will join from Preston North End on a free transfer after his contract expires, and the contract will officially take effect on July 1.

The 28-year-old former England U21 international will become the first goalkeeper signed by Liverpool manager Arne Sloter this summer. Woodman moved from Newcastle United to Championship side Preston North End on a three-year contract starting in the summer of 2022.

In his first season at Preston North End, Woodman won the club's Player of the Year award for his outstanding performance. He played 138 games for the team in three seasons and became a key figure in the defense.

Woodman has played for many clubs, including Swansea City, Kilmarnock and other teams. He has won the recognition of the English football world with his solid basic skills, good command of the defense and stable save performance.

Now, Woodman will embark on a new journey at Anfield to inject more competition and depth into Liverpool's goalkeeping system. It is reported that Woodman will go to the AXA Training Center next month to officially meet with Liverpool's first team and participate in Slote's pre-season training plan.

For Liverpool, Woodman's joining is also seen as a strategic reinforcement for the team's lineup rotation and goalkeeper reserves, which is even more important in the context of an intensive season and multi-line operations.

Liverpool currently has main goalkeeper Alisson Becker in the lineup. The arrival of Woodman will further improve the overall goalkeeper configuration and bring more tactical options to Sloter.
