Premier League champions Liverpool officially announced that they have signed Dutch international Jeremy Frimpong from Bundesliga powerhouse Leverkusen, activating his 35 million euro release clause. The deal will be officially completed after the summer transfer window opens this Sunday. At present, all parties to the transfer have agreed on all the details. Frimpong will sign a six-year contract with the Reds and the transfer fee will be paid in three installments.

The 24-year-old Frimpong is a versatile right-wing player who can not only play as a right back, but also as a winger. Liverpool's new coach Arne Sloter favors this speed player and believes that he will bring vitality and tactical flexibility to the team.

In the past two seasons, Frimpong has been an important member of Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso. In the 2023-24 season, he won the Bundesliga and German Cup double with the team, played 47 games in all competitions, contributed 14 goals and 12 assists; last season, he handed in a report card of 5 goals and 12 assists, showing his comprehensive ability on both offense and defense.

It is worth mentioning that Celtic will benefit from this transfer. Due to the second resale clause in the previous transfer agreement, the Scottish Premier League giants are expected to get a share of about 5 million pounds. Frimpong joined Celtic from Manchester City's youth training as early as 2019 for a transfer fee of only 300,000 pounds. In January 2021, he transferred to Leverkusen for a maximum price of 11.5 million pounds.
