On September 11, according to reporter Chris Haynes , the Mavericks have signed a one-year contract with Sharp. However, the industry generally believes that this is more likely a training camp contract to retain his player rights in the Development League.
Sharp had a remarkable college career. He played at John A. Logan College before transferring to Western Kentucky University, where he led the nation in blocks for two consecutive years and was twice named the league's Defensive Player of the Year . In his final season, he transferred to the University of Mississippi, where he averaged 6.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.6 blocks per game.
Currently, the Mavericks' 15 -man roster and two-way contract spots are all filled. Sharp will likely start in the Development League to continue honing his skills.
For the Mavericks, signing Sharp is a low-risk proposition. While his offensive game still needs improvement, his rare rim-protecting skills are inherently valuable. For Sharp personally, this contract represents an important first step toward the NBA . As long as he maintains his defensive dominance in the G League, he'll likely secure more consistent opportunities in the future.
