John Robertson, the legendary Nottingham Forest winger and a member of two European Championship-winning teams, has passed away at the age of 72.
The club confirmed that the legendary player, hailed as one of the greatest players in Timberwolves history, passed away peacefully on Christmas morning surrounded by his family after a long battle with illness.
Robertson's career was almost entirely intertwined with Nottingham Forest. He began and ended his playing career at the City Stadium, with a brief stint with city rivals Derby County, but what truly cemented his place in football history was the European miracle he achieved with the team in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
In the 1979 European Championship final, Robertson delivered a crucial cross, assisting Trevor Francis to score the winning goal and helping the team win the European Championship for the first time. In the 1980 final, Robertson scored himself, helping Nottingham Forest defeat Hamburg 1-0 and successfully defend their title, becoming one of the very few players in English football history to achieve a double.
At the national team level, Robertson made 28 appearances for Scotland and participated in the 1982 World Cup. His technique, vision, and composure in crucial moments made him one of the most representative wingers of that era.
After retiring, Robertson continued his involvement in football, transitioning to coaching and working alongside his former teammate Martin O'Neill for many years. He held important roles at several clubs, continuing his love and dedication to football.
In a heartfelt statement, Robertson's family said, "It is with immense pain and sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather. After a long battle with illness, John passed away peacefully on Christmas morning surrounded by his wife and family."
"Our only solace in our grief is that his suffering is over and he is reunited with his daughter Jessica. 'Rob' is a football hero to many, but to us, he was just John, just a dad, a family man... kind, loving, witty, humorous, and loyal."
“Although our hearts are breaking, we will always be grateful for the years we spent with him and the wonderful memories we made together. We will miss him every day and love him forever.”
This Nottingham Forest legend left behind a wife, children, and grandchildren, as well as a footballing life that is cherished by fans and family.
