The Philadelphia 76ers announced on Saturday that they had waived 23-year-old guard Ricky Quincil IV. Since Quincil's salary of about $2.2 million for the 2025/26 season will not be guaranteed until January 10, 2026, this move can save the 76ers some expenses.
Quincil entered the NBA as an undrafted player in 2023 and signed a two-way contract with the 76ers. His performance in his rookie season was remarkable, averaging 5.4 points, 1.4 rebounds and 0.5 assists in 9.0 minutes per game, with a shooting percentage of 48.2% and a three-point shooting percentage of 37.5%.
In the 2024/25 season, Quincil played 73 regular season games for the 76ers, averaging 7.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 17.1 minutes per game, with his field goal percentage and three-point shooting percentage dropping to 38.2% and 25.8% respectively. His ability to rush and grab rebounds was also criticized by 76ers coach Nick Nurse, who said on January 9 this year: "Transition offense is his strong point, and we certainly encourage him to play more fast breaks. My biggest concern is that he has to grab the rebounds before he can start a fast break. One of my key requirements for him is to do more and better in rebounding."
"He has excellent jumping ability, fast speed and good physical fitness, so he should be able to grab more rebounds on both offense and defense. We are working hard to get him more involved in rebounding to play to his advantage in fast breaks."
With Quincil's departure, the 76ers were able to free up space to sign two more players. It is reported that they hope to reach an agreement with restricted free agent Quentin Grimes.
