Napoli officially announced on Tuesday that they have completed a contract extension with their striker Matteo Politano. The new contract will extend the contract by one year, from its original expiration date of 2027, until June 30, 2028.
The 32-year-old Politano primarily plays as a right winger, but can also operate in various positions, including left winger, right midfielder, back-up striker, and center forward. He joined Napoli on a loan-to-buy basis in January 2020 and has since made 238 appearances, scoring 34 goals and providing 35 assists, winning two Serie A titles and one Coppa Italia with the team.
In addition to Napoli, Politano also played for Perugia, Pescara, Sassuolo, Inter Milan, and other teams. During this period, he played 289 games in all competitions, scoring 52 goals and providing 34 assists, including 10 Champions League games, 9 Europa League games, and 143 Serie A games.
Despite Napoli's summer signings of Kevin De Bruyne and Rasmus Hoyllen, Politano's central role remains unaffected. Earlier this month, his agent, Mario Giuffredi, told Kiss Kiss Napoli: "We are in talks with Napoli about a contract extension, with plans to extend it until 2028. We have been preparing for this for some time."
He added: "Mateo hopes to extend his career as long as possible and retire at Napoli. He is 32 years old, which is not old. If a player has a good personal lifestyle, he can play until he is 37 or 38. Acerbi, Damian, and even Ronaldo have proved that age does not limit their high level of performance on the field. Age has little impact on his ability to maintain a high level of performance. We hope to announce the contract extension within the next two weeks."
