Lyon announced on Thursday that they have parted ways with Serbian defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic. Following friendly negotiations, both parties reached an agreement to terminate his contract, which was originally scheduled to expire in June 2026.

The 37-year-old Matic has played for Kolubara, Kosice, Chelsea, Vitesse, Benfica, Manchester United, Roma and Rennes. During this period, he made a total of 607 appearances, scored 28 goals and provided 41 assists. He won 1 Slovak Cup, 1 Portuguese Super League, 1 Portuguese Cup, 2 Portuguese League Cups, 3 Premier League titles, 1 FA Cup and 1 English League Cup with the team.

In January 2024, Matic joined Lyon from Rennes for 2.6 million euros. So far, he has played 58 times for Lyon, contributing 1 goal and 1 assist.

In the announcement, Lyon commented on Matic: "With his rich experience, rigorous attitude and outstanding leadership, he has played a key role in the team's revival since joining, and continued to demonstrate his value as an important member of the team last season."
