The Kings are about to change their blood, and Monk may not be able to escape the fate of being traded

On August 22nd, the Sacramento Kings haven't made much actual moves this summer, but rumors have been swirling. Following the Kuminga sign-and-trade, the most in-the-know topics are the futures of former MVP Russell Westbrook and Malik Monk. According to the Dallas Hoops Journal, the Kings are "working very hard" to find a trade partner for Monk, but have so far been unsuccessful.

First, the backcourt is crowded. The Kings already have four shooting guards: Monk, LaVine, Ellis, and rookie Vince Carter. With the newly signed Schroder, the starting point guard position is already filled. If Westbrook joins, he will assume backup point guard duties, further reducing the playing time for Monk and others. Given Ellis's contract value and Carter's limited market, Monk is naturally the most likely target.

Secondly, there's salary pressure. Monk's contract has player options for $18.8 million, $20.2 million, and $21.6 million over the next three years. While reasonably priced, it takes up the Kings' limited long-term salary cap space. Currently, only Sabonis, Schroder, Clifford, and Monk are under contract for more than two years. If general manager Scott Perry prioritizes flexibility, moving Monk would be the most appropriate option. However, the league-wide reluctance to accept long-term contracts has put the Kings in a difficult position.

Finally, let's talk about the long-term vision. Monk has a powerful offense, but his efficiency is inconsistent, and his defense isn't particularly strong. The Kings, on the other hand, are trying to establish a defensive identity. Westbrook, though 36, still has the ability to disrupt the defense with his length and athleticism, which better aligns with management's direction.
