NBA official: Thunder star Alexander was elected this season's regular season MVP

The NBA officially announced on Wednesday that Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was named the 2024/25 regular season MVP.

This is the first time in Alexander's career that he has won the award. The 26-year-old has been a strong MVP contender in the past two seasons and finished second in the voting last season.

According to the voting results released by the league, Alexander received a total of 71 first-place votes and 29 second-place votes (913 points), winning by an overwhelming margin. Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic ranked second with 29 first-place votes and 71 second-place votes (787), while Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo ranked third with 88 third-place votes, 9 fourth-place votes and 3 fifth-place votes (470 points).

Alexander also became the second Canadian player in history to win the MVP after Steve Nash. He is also the third MVP winner in Thunder history, the first two being Kevin Durant (2013/14) and Russell Westbrook (2016/17).

In the regular season this season, Alexander played 76 times for the Thunder, averaging 32.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.4 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.0 blocks in 34.1 minutes per game, with a shooting percentage of 51.9%, a three-point shooting percentage of 37.5%, and a free throw shooting percentage of 89.8%, all of which set new career highs. Under his leadership, the Thunder topped the league with a record of 68 wins and 14 losses, tied for the sixth best single-season record in NBA history.

According to statistics, the Thunder's average net score per game this season is as high as 12.9 points, setting the NBA's highest single-season average net score record.

In terms of personal honors, Alexander was selected to the All-Star team for the third consecutive year this season, was named Western Conference Player of the Month three times, won the Player of the Week twice, and led the team to the NBA Cup finals. Although the Thunder eventually lost to the Bucks and finished second, Alexander was still selected to the All-Star team for his outstanding performance.
