RB Leipzig announced on Monday that they have confirmed the signing of Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Roko Reitz this summer. The two sides have signed a five-year contract, valid until June 30, 2031.
According to multiple reports, the base fee for Reitz's transfer to RB Leipzig is €20 million. If performance-related bonuses are included, the total transaction could reach as high as €23 million.
Regarding Reitz's signing, RB Leipzig's sporting director, Marcel Schäfer, explained: "Roko Reitz was our absolute first choice for the midfield position. We are very pleased that the transfer has finally been completed, and our long-term efforts have paid off. It is worth mentioning that the negotiations with all relevant parties have always been transparent and fair."
“ In addition to typical ‘Red Bull’ tactical indicators such as sprinting, high-intensity running, coverage and speed—in which Rocco ranks among the league’s top players—he also possesses excellent vision and ball control, the right mentality, and leadership qualities that he has already shown despite his young age.”
The 23-year-old Reitz came through the youth academy of Borussia Mönchengladbach and made his Bundesliga debut for the first team on October 24, 2020. He was then loaned to Sint-Truiden for a season and a half, and gradually developed into a key player for Mönchengladbach starting in 2023.
To date, Reitz has made 96 appearances for Borussia Mönchengladbach, scoring 8 goals and providing 7 assists.
After the transfer was completed, Borussia Mönchengladbach's sporting director, Ruben Schroeder, said: "Rocco has set a new record for the highest transfer fee for a homegrown player in Mönchengladbach's history. Reaching an agreement so early will greatly benefit our plans."
"Given his character and everything he has shown throughout his career so far, Rocco will do everything in his power to help us achieve our goals for this season."
Reitz added: “I’ve decided to start a new chapter in my career this summer. Of course, I understand that some people may find it hard to understand my decision to leave the club. Making this decision has not been easy for me. I can assure you that I will give my all in every remaining game, especially in this weekend’s derby.”
This Saturday afternoon, Borussia Mönchengladbach will travel to face FC Köln in a derby match. They currently sit 12th in the Bundesliga with 28 points from 7 wins, 7 draws, and 12 losses, 7 points above the relegation zone.
