Real Betis announced on its official website on Friday that the club has extended the contract of its Spanish defensive midfielder Sergi Altimira.
According to Real Betis' official statement, Altimira has signed on a new long-term four-year deal with the club which runs until the summer of 2029. As per the La Liga's regulations, his release clause will also be raised to €55 million.
About Sergi Altimira
Altimira, 23, was born on August 25, 2001 in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. He is 1.88 meters tall and plays as a defensive midfielder. His father Aureli and cousin Adria are both professional football players, and he and his cousin were teammates.
At the age of 11, Altimira joined Barcelona's famous La Masia youth academy with his cousin Adria. In 2019, he moved to Sabadell's youth academy and was loaned-out to non-league club Granollers in the summer of the following year.
After returning to the club at the end of his loan spell in the summer of 2020, Altimira made his debut for Sabadell in September of the following year. During this spell, his outstanding performance caused his former club's legendary player Gerard Pique to call on Barcelona to activate Altimira's buyback clause, but in the end, due to Barcelona's poor financial situation, the transfer was rejected by the La Liga and fell through.
After leaving the club at the end of the contract in the summer of 2023, Altimira joined Getafe as a free agent, but in August of the same year, he joined Real Betis as his €2 million release clause was triggered.
Since becoming a member of Los Verdiblancos, Altimira has played 60 times for the La Liga powerhouse in all competitions so far, scoring 3 goals and assisting 1 time.
