According to NBA insider Chris Haynes on Thursday, Jonathan Cuminga remains committed to leaving the Golden State Warriors before the February 5 trade deadline.
“Kuminga has no intention of staying with the Golden State Warriors. He desperately wants to be traded before the trade deadline,” Haynes stated clearly on Amazon’s NBA on Prime, adding, “His relationship with head coach Steve Kerr is completely broken and irreparable. He feels he hasn’t received any support from the team throughout, which has led to feelings of being belittled.”
As the 7th overall pick in the first round of the 2021 NBA draft, Cuminga has played 277 regular season games for the Warriors, averaging 12.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game, with a field goal percentage of 44.5% and a three-point percentage of 32.1%. He also averaged 7.0 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 0.7 assists in 34 playoff games, winning the 2022 NBA championship with the team.
However, Kuminga's relationship with the Warriors continued to deteriorate over time. The conflict between the two sides finally erupted in the 2025 offseason: the Warriors insisted on making the second year of the contract a team option and refused to grant Kuminga a no-trade clause. After a long tug-of-war, Kuminga was ultimately forced to sign a two-year, $48.5 million contract with a team option for the second year.
So far this season, Kuminga has played 19 regular season games for the Warriors, averaging 12.2 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 24.6 minutes per game, with a field goal percentage of 44.5% and a three-point percentage of 32.1%. During this period, he missed 7 games due to patellar tendinitis in both knees, and shortly after his return, he was disqualified from playing for 16 consecutive games.
To make matters worse, Cuminga suffered an ankle sprain and mild knee hyperextension in today's 115-123 loss to the Dallas Mavericks. Kerr also told reporters after the game that he will undergo an MRI tomorrow.
After a series of setbacks, it remains uncertain whether Kuminga will be able to leave the team as he wishes. Although he requested a trade from the Warriors as early as January 15, his market value is far below his personal expectations.
According to NBA reporter Sam Amick, the Sacramento Kings are currently the only team interested in Cuminga. He also pointed out that no other teams have contacted him at this stage.
