According to ESPN's Shams Charania on Monday, the Indiana Pacers have signed Mark McClung to a non-guaranteed, multi-year contract. McClung, who previously only received training camp or two-way contracts, has finally achieved a major breakthrough in his career.
McClung, 26, was a 2021 undrafted player who primarily plays guard. He has played in just six regular season games over the past four years, averaging 5.5 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 42.9% from the field and 33.3% from three-point range.
Despite limited NBA opportunities, McClung has been a star in the D-League. To date, he has appeared in 116 games for the South Bay Lakers, Windy City Bulls, Delaware Blue Jackets, and Osceola Magic, averaging 22.9 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game. He also played a significant role in the Delaware Blue Jackets' 2023 NBA D-League championship.
In addition, McClung has won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest for three consecutive years (2023-2025).
For the Pacers, McClung's addition will help alleviate their backcourt shortage. Currently, starting point guard Tyrese Haliburton is out for the season with a right Achilles tendon injury, while T.J. McConnell is expected to miss at least a month with a left hamstring injury. Andrew Nembhard, Benedict Marceline, and Obi Toppin are also facing varying degrees of injury.
To make room for McClung, the Pacers plan to waive 24-year-old center James Wiseman. Wiseman, the second overall pick in the 2019 draft, has played just two games for the Pacers over the past two seasons due to a torn left Achilles tendon. He also played for the Golden State Warriors and Detroit Pistons, averaging 9.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 0.7 assists, and 0.7 blocks in 149 career appearances, totaling 18.9 minutes per game.
