According to ESPN's Shams Charania on Wednesday, Russell Westbrook has reached an agreement with the Sacramento Kings. He is expected to officially join the Kings later this week and sign a one-year, $3.6 million veteran minimum contract.

Westbrook has been in close communication with the Kings since the beginning of the summer. Although there were rumors that Westbrook might play overseas, he has always been focused on getting his next NBA contract.

For Westbrook, the Kings, being close to his hometown, is the most suitable landing spot at the moment. In addition, he has close relationships with many players and management within the Kings, including Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, Assistant General Manager BJ Armstrong, General Manager Scott Perry and Head Coach Doug Christie.

Westbrook, 36, was the fourth overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. He has played for the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, and Denver Nuggets in his career. He has played 1,237 regular season games, averaging 21.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, 8.0 assists, and 1.6 steals per game.

Westbrook has also been selected to the All-Star team nine times, the NBA All-NBA Team twice, and has won the regular season MVP award once (2017). He holds the most triple-doubles in NBA history (203) and is one of only two players in league history to achieve 25,000 points, 8,000 rebounds, and 8,000 assists.

As a veteran point guard, Westbrook's arrival provides the Kings with much-needed backcourt depth. Considering that the Kings ranked 28th in the league in bench points and 29th in assists per game last season, Westbrook's addition will significantly strengthen the bench.
