According to multiple media reports, the Brooklyn Nets are open to trading Michael Porter Jr.
Michael Porter Jr., 27, is a 6'3" (2.08m) and 99kg (4.5kg) forward who was selected 14th overall in the first round of the 2018 NBA draft by the Denver Nuggets. After playing for the Nuggets for seven years, he was traded to the Brooklyn Nets, where he played a total of 345 regular season games, averaging 16.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game, and won the 2023 NBA championship with the team.
So far this season, Porter Jr. has played 21 regular season games for the Nets, averaging 25.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists in 32.6 minutes per game, with a field goal percentage of 49.7% and a three-point percentage of 39.9%. He is also one of only five players in the league who can simultaneously meet the requirements of averaging at least 25 points per game, a field goal percentage of over 49%, and a three-point percentage of at least 39%. The other four are Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Anthony Edwards, and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
However, Porter Jr.'s stellar performance failed to reverse the Nets' slump. They currently sit at 7-18, ranking 13th in the Eastern Conference, and are not in a position to contend for the playoffs in the short term.
On the other hand, the Nets' primary task at this stage is to develop young talent and continue tanking in order to acquire a high draft pick in 2026. Given that Porter Jr.'s playing level is contrary to the team's current plans, the Nets are prepared to assess his market value before the trade deadline.
According to a previous report by ClutchPoint's Eric Slater, the Nets were willing to listen to trade offers for Porter Jr. before February. Forbes' Evan Sidley added on Wednesday that the Nets' asking price for Porter Jr. included a salary-matching contract and at least one first-round pick: Porter Jr.'s current contract expires in 2027, with salaries of $38.33 million this year and $40.81 million next year.
Sidley further pointed out that the Detroit Pistons are considered one of the potential trade destinations for Porter Jr. They could work with the Nets to build a trade framework around Tobias Harris.
