The Telegraph: Arsenal plans to expand the Emirates Stadium, hoping to increase capacity to more than 70,000

According to an exclusive report by The Daily Telegraph, Arsenal plans to carry out a major expansion of the Emirates Stadium. According to the club's vision, the capacity of the Emirates Stadium after the expansion will be increased from the current 60,700 to more than 70,000.

With this move, Arsenal will regain its position as London's largest stadium, surpassing city rivals West Ham United (62,500) and arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur (62,850). It will also increase their annual revenue by tens of millions of pounds while easing the pressure on the current season ticket waiting list of over 100,000 people.

Due to the residential area surrounding the stadium and its proximity to subways, railways and multiple stations, the Emirates Stadium cannot be further expanded. Therefore, Arsenal plans to increase capacity by adjusting the slope of the stands, reconfiguring the seating layout, and renovating the roof, while maintaining the overall appearance of the outer ring of the stadium.

Arsenal's management also drew inspiration from Real Madrid's renovation, which cost over €1 billion between 2019 and 2024. The renovation included a retractable dome, a 360-degree LED screen, and multi-purpose underground storage facilities. The goal is to create a multifunctional, digital-first stadium that can accommodate concerts and other major events.

Various indications indicate that the expansion is expected to cost at least £500 million. Due to the scale of the project, Arsenal may need to temporarily relocate their home games to Wembley Stadium during the construction period.

However, Arsenal has yet to apply for planning permission for the stadium upgrade. The Daily Telegraph predicts the approval process could take up to five years and involve overcoming numerous legal, community, and infrastructure hurdles. It's worth noting that Arsenal's owners, the Kroenke family, have extensive experience in infrastructure development: they spearheaded the Los Angeles Rams' $5.5 billion, 100,000-seat SoFi Stadium project, which will also host eight 2026 World Cup matches and the opening ceremony of the 2028 Olympics.
