San Antonio Spurs' star center Victor Wenbanama is expected to make his official return in the UAE NBA Cup semifinals against the Oklahoma City Thunder, giving the team a strong boost in their quest for a spot in the finals.
According to the Spurs' latest injury report, Viktor Axelsen's status has been upgraded to probable. Head coach Mitch Johnson subsequently confirmed that the French star is ready to return and will play a crucial game in Las Vegas after recovering from injury.
Wambaneyama had missed 12 consecutive games since November 14 due to a left calf strain, a total of four weeks. Johnson revealed that Wambaneyama's recovery has been progressing well recently. He has not only completed high-intensity training sessions in the mornings in Los Angeles, but has also warmed up on the field before several games without wearing any extra protective gear, indicating that his physical condition is close to match fitness.
In the 12 games before his injury, Wabanjama averaged 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3.6 blocks, making him an indispensable core player on both ends of the court for the Spurs. Despite missing their number one draft pick center, the Spurs still demonstrated strong team depth, achieving an impressive 9-3 record during his absence.
The Spurs defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 132-119 in their last game, securing their place in the NBA Cup semifinals. Eight players scored in double figures, showcasing excellent teamwork. Johnson stated that the team doesn't rely on a single star player, but emphasized the importance of Wahlgren and Yamaz.
“He is the most crucial piece of the puzzle, but it still requires everyone to work together to complete the puzzle,” Johnson added.
