On October 7th, the Memphis Grizzlies lost their preseason opener to the Detroit Pistons 112-128 , failing to get off to a winning start. The Grizzlies started hot but were forced to fight back in the second quarter by the Pistons, ultimately failing to secure a victory.
For the Grizzlies, Ty Jerome scored a team-high 16 points, Cantavious Caldwell - Pope contributed 15 points, and Scottie Pippen II had 13. Yorkie Landale and Santi Aldama each grabbed seven rebounds.
For the Pistons, Cade Cunningham had an all-around performance, scoring 20 points; Tobias Harris scored 13 points; Paul Reed grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, and Tolu Smith also had 11 rebounds.
The Grizzlies were hot in the first quarter, hitting all eight of their three-pointers and scoring 42 points in the quarter, leading 55-34 . However, the Pistons went on a 40-9 run in the second quarter , overtaking the score and taking a 74-64 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter , the Grizzlies attempted a comeback, going on a 14-6 run to tie the score at 83 , but the Pistons responded with a 14-5 run to regain control. By the end of the third quarter, the Grizzlies were trailing 88-97 . The Grizzlies' energy waned in the final quarter, and they were repeatedly attacked defensively, ultimately losing 112-128 .
