Borussia Mönchengladbach officially announced on Tuesday that Roland Wilkus has voluntarily resigned as sporting director due to "personal issues".

Roland Wilkus, 58, has worked at Borussia Mönchengladbach since 1990 and was promoted to sporting director in 2022. After leaving office, he said: "I have always emphasized that the club is above all else, so I made this decision."

All signs indicate that Borussia Mönchengladbach's dismal performance this season is the reason for Wilkus' departure. The team is still winless and ranks last in the Bundesliga with only 2 points.

Regarding Wilkus' departure, Borussia Mönchengladbach chairman Rainer Bonhof explained: "We all agreed that the future sporting direction of the club needed to be planned in a different way. This was not an easy step for Roland. He has devoted himself to Borussia Mönchengladbach and took over the role of sporting director in February 2022 under extremely difficult circumstances. We thank him for his contribution during his tenure. He has held various positions at the club for more than 30 years and he will always be a member of Borussia Mönchengladbach."

Michael Holmann, Chairman of the Borussia Mönchengladbach Supervisory Board, added: "In our internal discussions, the club's well-being was always the primary consideration for everyone involved, including Roland Wilkus himself. We reached this agreement in an atmosphere of mutual respect. The Board of Directors, Supervisory Board and Management are in close consultation on next steps and the way forward."
