Brighton defender Meles Mpom falls to the ground with a serious head injury

In this round of the English Women's Super League match between Arsenal and Brighton, Brighton defender Maelys Mpome was hit hard on the head by the ball while defending in the second half, and then fell to the ground. The game was interrupted for nearly 10 minutes.

The incident occurred in the second half when Mpom was trying to block a cross in the penalty area when the ball hit her in the face. She collapsed on the Emirates Stadium turf, unable to move. The team doctor and several medical staff immediately rushed to the field to rescue her.

After a preliminary examination at the scene, Mpom was put in a neck brace and carried off the field on a stretcher, accompanied by six medical staff. She wore an oxygen mask throughout the process, a worrying scene. Brighton fans stood up and applauded as she was carried off.

Brighton later released a statement on social media: "Following a long timeout, Melis was stretchered off the pitch after receiving treatment. Wishing you a speedy recovery, Melis."

After the game, Brighton manager Dario Vidosic confirmed in an interview that Mpom had suffered a concussion. Vidosic said: "She has regained consciousness and can even walk and take a shower. This is very positive news. I hope she is doing well. The health of the players is always more important than the game."

Vidošić also admitted that his teammates' concerns about Mpom may have affected the team's performance. Brighton fell behind in the first half due to an own goal. Although they created several threats before the injury, their attacking play was obviously restricted after the accident and they ultimately failed to equalize the score, losing to Arsenal 0-1.

Mpom joined Brighton from Chelsea this summer and this was her fifth league game for the team. The club will continue to monitor her recovery.
