Augsburg announced on their official website on Monday that the club have extended the contract of its captain, Dutch center-back Jeffrey Gouweleeuw.

According to Augsburg's official statement, Gouweleeuw has signed on a new short-term one-and-a-half-year with the club which will only run until the summer of 2027.

After completing his contract extension procedures, Gouweleeuw, who was interviewed by the Augsburg official website again, said, "Augsburg is my club, it feels like home here, so I'm happy to stay."

"After my injury, I'm recovering step by step, striving to return to the field as soon as possible and contribute to the team again. The opportunity to become Augsburg's all-time leading scorer is an extra motivation for me."

About Jeffrey Gouweleeuw

The 34-year-old Gouweleeuw was born on July 10, 1991, in Heemskerk, Netherlands. He is 1.87 meters tall and primarily plays as a center back, but can also play as a defensive midfielder.

Gouweleeuw joined the youth academy of the local non-league club, ADO '20, in Heemskerk at a young age, and then joined the youth academy of Heerenveen in 2006, before completing his Heerenveen first-team debut in April 2011.

In July 2013, Gouweleeuw moved to AZ Alkmaar for €1 million.

During his two-and-a-half-year spell with AZ, Gouweleeuw's outstanding performances attracted the attention of Olympiacos.

In January 2016, Gouweleeuw joined Augsburg for €2.5 million.

Since joining Augsburg, Gouweleeuw has made 278 appearances for the Bundesliga club in all competitions so far, scoring 7 goals and providing 12 assists.
