The Minnesota Timberwolves have announced that their star player, Anthony Edwards, will be sidelined for at least one to two weeks due to inflammation in his right knee.
This sudden injury not only dealt a heavy blow to the Timberwolves, who are currently in the race for a playoff spot in the Western Conference, but also means that this All-Star guard will most likely miss out on the selection of major awards such as the NBA All-Team this season.
An MRI confirmed that Edwards suffered from inflammation in his right knee, and he will undergo a follow-up examination later this month. He had been playing through the injury, even scoring a whopping 42 points against the Golden State Warriors.
Edwards' absence will leave the sixth-ranked Timberwolves without their key player in crucial games like the seventh-ranked Phoenix Suns. However, the good news is that media reports suggest the injury is not expected to affect his playoff run.
This injury is extremely detrimental to Edwards's personal achievements. Under the league's new 65-game attendance rule, players must play in all 65 eligible games to be eligible for awards. He has already missed 10 games this season, and in one game last October, he played only 3 minutes before leaving the court (which does not count towards his eligibility).
He currently has only 57 games played, 8 short of the required number. If he misses the next 7 games after a two-week break, the Timberwolves will only have 7 regular season games left, making it impossible for him to reach the mandatory 65-game requirement.
