◤Premier League◢ Virgil van Dijk scores with a header as Liverpool narrowly defeated Sunderland with a 0-1 away win..

Liverpool narrowly defeated Sunderland with a 0-1 away win at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday on matchday of the 2025/26 Premier League season.

In the first half, Wirtz's shot hit the post and Brobbey was brought down in the box by Ibrahima Konaté but was not awarded a penalty due to a suspected dive. In the second half, Van Dijk scored with a header. Ultimately, Liverpool won 0-1 away against Sunderland.

After this round of matches, the Black Cats, whose unbeaten home record ended, are temporarily 11th on the table with 36 points; the Reds, back on winning ways, are temporarily still 6th with 42 points, but are only 3 points behind their arch-rivals Manchester United, who occupy the last Champions League spot (4th place).

First Half

In the 30th minute, Alexis Mac Allister passes horizontally from the right wing. Upon receiving the pass, Florian Wirtz took a right-footed long shot from outside the penalty area, but his shot was saved by Robin Roefs.

Three minutes later, Cody Gakpo passes horizontally from the left wing, and Wirtz quickly followed up, got the ball and adjusted his angle before volleying with his left foot from the left side of the box, but his shot unfortunate hit the bottom right corner of the post and bounced off! In the 38th minute, Mohamed Salah crossed into the box from the right wing. His pass was initially blocked and cleared off not far away by Daniel Ballard. Wirtz rose high and attempted with a header in the box, however his effort was saved by Roefs.

In the first minute of first-half stoppage time, Bryan Brobbey quickly followed up and was brought down in the box by Ibrahima Konaté, but the referee didn't react to it. The VAR assistant referee immediately intervened, and after reviewing the video replay, the referee determined that Brobbey appeared to have dived before being brought down, thus upholding the decision not to award Sunderland a penalty!

At halftime, Sunderland and Liverpool temporarily enter the break with a goalless draw.

Second Half

Both teams swtiched sides as the match continued. In the 58th minute, Sunderland launched a quick counter-attack. Mac Allister misplaced a pass from his own back half. Nordi Mukiele quickly followed up, intercepted the ball and took a few steps before taking a left-footed long shot from outside the penalty area, but his shot went just slightly wide of the bottom right corner of the post.

3 minutes later, Liverpool earned a deadly corner opportunity. Salah took the corner by crossing it into the box. Virgil van Dijk rose high and scored with a header in the box. His effort was initially blocked by Habib Diarra but sitll deflected into the net! Liverpool broke the deadlock first to take a 0-1 lead! This was the Reds captain's 23rd goal in the Premier League for Liverpool!

In the 71st minute, Mac Allister passes horizontally from the left wing. Salah quickly followed up, got the ball and took a few steps before volleying with his left-foot from the right side of the box. His shot was initially blocked and cleared off not far away by Enzo Le Fee. Hugo Ekitike quickly followed up and upon picking up the loose ball, took a right-footed follow-up shot against the outrushing Roefs from a very close distance in the box, but his shot ball went over the crossbar.

7 minutes later, Andy Robertson crossed into the box from the left wing. Ekitike rose high and attempted with a header in the box, however his effort went just wide of the left post.

In the 7th minute of stoppage time, Curtis Jones made a straight pass from the attacking third. Mohamed Salah quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass, volleyed with his right foot from the center of the box, but his shot went just wide of the bottom left corner of the post.
