Monaco defeated Metz 5-2 on matchday 5 of the 2025/26 Ligue 1 season at the Stade Louis-II on Sunday.

In the first half, Diallo scored with a volley, and Biereth netted with a close-range shot. In the second half, Fati netted with a close-range shot, and Hein converted a penalty kick. At a crucial moment, Fati scored with a header, Kouao scored an own goal, and Ilenikhena volleyed home. Ultimately, Monaco defeated Metz 5-2. Following this round of matches, Les Monégasque are currently in second place on the table with 12 points; Metz is at the bottom with 1 point.

First Half

In the 13th minute, Cheikh Sabaly made a low through ball from the left wing. After successfully beating the offside trap, Habib Diallo quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass, volleyed the ball into the bottom right corner past the outrushing Philipp Köhn from the center of the box with his right foot, Metz broke the deadlock first to take a 0-1 lead!

7 minutes later, Gauthier Hein made a straight pass from the right wing. Koffi Kouao quickly followed up, got the ball and took a few steps before volleying a right-footed shot at a difficult angle from the right side of the box, but his shot was saved by Köhn.

In the 28th minute, Takumi Minamino passes horizontally from the left side of the box, Mika Biereth quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass, shoved the ball into the bottom right corner of the net with his right foot from a very close distance in the box. Monaco equalized Metz at 1-1! The former Arsenal youth academy graduate finally broke his near three-month goal drought!

Second Half

Both teams switched sides as the match continued. In the 46th minute, Lamine Camara passes horizontally from the right side of the box. Ansu Fati quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass, shoved the ball into the bottom left corner of the net with his left foot from a very close distance in the box. Monaco took the lead at 2-1! The Barcelona loanee scored just 98 seconds after coming on as a substitute, becoming the fastest player to score on his debut after coming on as a substitute in Ligue 1 history since former Nantes Moroccan international striker Yacine Bammou, who scored just 32 seconds after coming on as a substitute in 2014!

In the 63rd minute, Minamino fouled Kouao while defending in his own penalty area. The VAR assistant referee immediately make reminder, and the referee, after reviewing the VAR replay, confirmed the foul and awarded a penalty to Metz. Gauthier Hein took the penalty and scored with his left foot, equalizing Monaco at 2-2! The Metz captain scored against Monaco again after six years!

20 minutes later, Krepin Diatta's cross from the right into the box was met by Ansu Fati, who rose high in the area to head home his second goal, giving Monaco a 3-2 lead. This was Fati's first double in a match after two years!

In the 86th minute, Monaco had a crucial corner kick opportunity. Camara took the corner by crossing it into the box. The ball was blocked by Kouao, but somehow it flew straight into the bottom right corner of his own goal, resulting in an own goal and Jonathan Fisher was unable to reach it, thus extending Monaco's lead to 4-2! Kouao became the man who both created a penalty and scored an own goal in this match!

In the third minute of injury time, Stanis Idumbo's horizontal pass from the front was quickly followed up by George Ilenikhena, who then dribbled into the left side of the box and volleyed into the bottom right corner of the net with a left-footed shot, thereby securing Monaco's 5-2 victory!

When the final whistle is blown, Monaco scored three goals in the last 10 minutes of the game and defeated Metz by 5-2.
