Fonseca confirms Lacazette will leave Lyon this summer, ending his 17-year career

Lyon coach Paulo Fonseca confirmed on Thursday that he will part ways with captain Alexandre Lacazette, whose contract expires this summer. As for Lacazette's next stop, it is still unknown.

"I spoke to Alex today," Fonseca said in a press conference ahead of this weekend's game against Angers. "There is no doubt that this will be his last game for Lyon. This news will give the team extra motivation. He has done a great job for the club. He is a very professional player and I enjoy working with him. We have to play a good game for him and he deserves a perfect farewell."

A few minutes later, the news was confirmed by Lacazette's teammate, French attacker Rayan Cherki. He said at the pre-match press conference: "It is true, he has always been my strong support. I have always tried my best to repay his support. Thank you, my brother, thank you for everything you have done for us, for the club and for me. He is about to leave the team as a Lyon legend, and in my heart he is also the greatest legend in the club's history. I have enjoyed the time fighting side by side with him and I hope he feels the same."

Alexandre Lacazette, 33, is a native of Lyon and plays as a center forward. He joined Lyon's youth training system in 2003 and made his debut for the first team in Ligue 1 on May 5, 2010.

In July 2017, Lacazette transferred to Arsenal for 53 million euros. He played for Arsenal for five seasons, contributing 71 goals and 35 assists in 206 games in all lines, and won the FA Cup and the English Super Cup with the team.

In July 2022, Lacazette returned to Lyon as a free agent. So far, he has played 390 times for Lyon, scored 199 goals and provided 55 assists, and won 1 French Cup and 2 French Super Cup titles with the team.
