Five-time All-Star point guard John Wall officially announces his retirement

Five-time NBA All-Star point guard John Wall has officially announced his retirement, ending his 11-year professional basketball career.

The 34-year-old Wall posted a video on social media, expressing his heartfelt gratitude to his mother, family, teammates, coaches and fans for their support. He said: "I walked off the court today, but I didn't leave the sport."

"Basketball will always be a part of my life. New opportunities are coming, and I feel now is the time to confidently step into the next chapter. I'm grateful for every cheer and every moment. Retiring is not over, and I will continue to move forward in my own way."

Wall joined the Washington Wizards as the No. 1 pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, where he spent the most brilliant nine years of his career. He averaged 19 points, 9.2 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game, leading the team to four playoff appearances, including three Eastern Conference semifinals.

In the 2016-17 season, Wall averaged 23.1 points and 10.7 assists per game and was named to the NBA Third Team. In his prime, Wall was known for his speed and explosiveness, winning the 2014 All-Star Slam Dunk Contest and earning an All-Defensive Second Team selection in 2015.

The Washington Wizards also paid tribute to Wall after the retirement news was announced: "One of our team legends. The definition of an era. A lasting legacy. Forever a Wizard. Congratulations on your retirement, John Wall."

However, injuries have been the biggest regret of Wall's career. He was sidelined for the entire 2019-20 season due to a ruptured Achilles tendon. He subsequently played for the Houston Rockets and the Los Angeles Clippers, but never regained his peak form. Ultimately, he played in only 34 games for the Clippers in his final NBA season.

Despite a career punctuated by injuries, Wall still averaged 18.7 points and 8.9 assists per game. His speed, passion, and years in Washington will be forever etched in the annals of the NBA and the Washington Wizards.
