Keeping emotions stable Doherty: I won't let winning or losing affect me too much

Wolves defender Doherty recently shared his way of mentally coping with and preparing for games in an interview, saying that he never lets the outcome of the game affect him too much.

In the 2024/25 Premier League, Doherty played 30 times for Wolves and contributed two goals and one assist.

When asked how he prepares for a game mentally, the 33-year-old Doherty shared, "If I were to give someone some advice, I would probably say don't do it because I don't have any special habits in this regard. I even use my phone an hour before the game. Of course, I follow the same routine before the game, everyone has a unified diet and so on."

"I know it's coming up, but I don't change the way I prepare. I still go to bed the way I normally do, and I don't do anything differently whether I'm playing or not."

It is worth mentioning that Wolves had a difficult time in the past Premier League season and eventually finished 16th.

Doherty said, "I don't spend too much time analyzing the game over and over again. My emotions have never fluctuated much and have always been very stable. I will still live my life as usual if I lose the game, and the same is true if I win. I won't let victory or defeat affect me too much. Keeping calm is a natural thing for me. This is my personality. I am always very calm, and others may think that I don't care a little because I don't show my emotions very often. But I never get overly excited, which is also a good way because I won't bring the emotions of the game home."

"I usually start to really think about the game on Friday, the day before the game. Even if the whole week of training is to prepare for the game, I will only start to think seriously on Friday, such as starting to pay attention to hydration and other related details, and then when the game whistle blows, I will completely switch to the game state."

In addition, Doherty also said, "In fact, I have always been like this. You can ask any teammates or coaches I have met in my career. My personality has always been like this. This is my characteristic. I never get too excited or too frustrated. I just let things take their course and don't let small external things bother me."

On the other hand, Wolves will participate in a friendly match against Stoke City next week, and in the first round of the 2025/26 Premier League season, Wolves will host Manchester City at home.
