Carlisle completed a contract extension with the Pacers and led the team to the NBA Finals last season

The Indiana Pacers announced Tuesday that they have signed head coach Rick Carlisle to a multi-year contract extension. Per team policy, the terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Carlisle returned to the Pacers for a third time in June 2021, and next season will be his ninth season coaching the team. According to NBA official statistics, Carlisle led the team to a 338-318 record during his tenure and advanced to the NBA Finals last season after a 25-year absence.

Despite the Pacers' 4-3 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Finals, Carlisle still earned the trust of management and players. Regarding the decision to re-sign Carlisle, Pacers President of Basketball Operations Kevin Pritchard explained in a statement: "Since returning to the Pacers in 2021, Carlisle has been a key figure in our success. He led us to consecutive Eastern Conference Finals appearances and our return to the NBA Finals after 25 years."

"Beyond his coaching accomplishments, which have earned him a place among the greatest coaches in NBA history, Carlisle has remained deeply involved in the community and continues to give back to the state of Indiana through his 'Drive and Dish' program."

Carlisle said: "Herb Simon, the Simon family, Steven Rails, Kevin Pritchard and our players make Indiana so special. Go!"

Carlisle, 65, has served as an assistant coach for the New Jersey Nets, Portland Trail Blazers and Indiana Pacers, assisting head coaches such as Bill Fitch, Chuck Daly, P.J. Carlesimo and Larry Bird. He has been a head coach since 2001, with stints with the Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers and Dallas Mavericks.

In his 13 seasons as Mavericks coach, Carlisle became the longest-tenured and most successful coach in the team's history. As of his resignation in June 2021, he had led the team to a 555-478 record and won the NBA championship in the 2010-11 season.

With Gregg Popovich transitioning to the Spurs as president of basketball operations and Tom Thibodeau being fired by the Knicks, Carlisle becomes the oldest active NBA head coach. He currently has a regular season record of 993 wins and 860 losses, and his 86 playoff wins rank him 10th all-time.
