Everton have confirmed that a fan has been banned from attending Sunday's game against Southampton at Goodison Park after attempting to dismantle his own seat - which will be the team's final Premier League match at the century-old ground.
It is reported that the fan "sneaked into the stadium with tools" after Everton drew 2-2 with Ipswich at home in early May, and was captured by CCTV trying to dismantle the seats. At present, his season ticket has been suspended by the club and he is banned from entering the stadium to watch the game. Merseyside Police is investigating the incident and the club said it will decide whether to impose further penalties based on the results of the investigation.
Everton stressed in a statement that any attempt to illegally remove stadium property may result in the permanent revocation of season tickets and termination of future membership.
Goodison Park, one of the most historic home stadiums in England, will be retired after the end of this season. Everton will move to a new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock next season. This incident cast a shadow on what should have been a warm farewell match.
