Werder Bremen officially announced on Tuesday that Leonardo Bittencourt will leave the club on a free transfer next summer when his contract expires. He will be able to begin negotiations with interested clubs regarding a transfer starting January 1st.
The 31-year-old Bittencourt primarily plays as an attacking midfielder, but can also play as a left winger, central midfielder, and right winger. He came through the Energie Cottbus youth academy and has played for Borussia Dortmund, Hannover 96, FC Köln, and Hoffenheim during his professional career.
In September 2019, Bittencourt joined Werder Bremen on a loan-to-buy deal. To date, he has made 179 appearances for Bremen, scoring 20 goals and providing 15 assists.
However, Bittencourt's role on the field at Werder Bremen has gradually diminished over time. So far this season, he has only made 8 appearances under Horst Steffen, 6 of which were as a substitute.
Regarding Bittencourt's departure, Werder Bremen's sporting director, Clemens Fritz, commented: "For the past six and a half years, Leão and I have maintained a good and honest relationship. Even when discussing his expiring contract, we communicated openly. We ultimately reached a consensus and decided to part ways next summer."
“We are very grateful for everything Leo has done for Werder Bremen so far, both on and off the pitch. He has been an important figure in the dressing room for many years, always offering critical opinions and being fully committed to his responsibilities. We believe he will give his all for Werder Bremen until the very last game.”
Bittencourt stated, "My time at Werder Bremen has always been incredibly meaningful to me, but I feel it's time to embrace new challenges this summer. Throughout all discussions about the future, we've maintained an open, honest, and respectful attitude. Therefore, I believe it's appropriate to clearly announce my decision to leave now. This allows the club, myself, and my family to calmly look to the future and make plans. However, until the end of the season, I will continue to give my all for the club and enjoy every game to come."
As for Bittencourt's future, nothing is certain yet. According to Sky Sports Germany, teams in both the Bundesliga and MLS have expressed interest in him.
