Sunderland advance to the FA Cup Round of 16; Lebrides looks forward to the challenges ahead.

Sunderland, nicknamed the "Black Cats," defeated Oxford United 1-0 in the fourth round of the 2025/26 FA Cup, thanks to a penalty from Habib Diarra, thus advancing to the round of 16. After the match, coach Lebrides said the players showed positive energy and he was looking forward to the next game.

In the 30th minute, Dennis Chirkin was tripped by Oxford United defender Marcosso while dribbling forward, and the referee awarded Sunderland a penalty. Habib Diarra then converted the penalty, giving Sunderland a 1-0 lead.

Sunderland ultimately defeated Oxford United 1-0 away from home, successfully advancing to the FA Cup Round of 16.

Sunderland manager Lebrides said in an interview, "There are never any easy games in the FA Cup. We played here last season and lost 0-2. The players are prepared for this game, including dealing with long balls and trying to break down our center-backs' tactics."

“The opponents were constantly trying to win back possession, which was basically the main plot of the whole game, and we dealt with that very well in the second half. We had to deal with a lot of long passes and throw-ins, but when we had scoring opportunities, we capitalized on them. The players had great understanding and clearly understood the importance of this tournament.”

In addition, Lebrides said, "This was an important game for us and the fans, which made the game more difficult, but the team showed positive energy."

“We have great respect for this tournament and we fight for each other and for the team badges on our chests. We are looking forward to the results of the draw. The referee blew the whistle to end the first half, and we took a 1-0 lead thanks to Habib Diarra’s penalty.”
