Wolfsburg officially announced on Monday that the buy-out clause for Lyon's loan signing of right-back Sael Cumbetti has officially come into effect. The two sides signed a three-and-a-half-year contract, valid until June 30, 2029.
Kumbédi arrived on loan from Lyon this summer and has quickly developed into an indispensable pillar of Wolfsburg's defense. To date, he has made 10 appearances for Wolfsburg, providing 4 assists.
According to Lyon's official statement, the buyout fee for Cumbetti is €6 million. In addition to the fixed transfer fee, Lyon may also receive bonuses of up to €2 million and a 10% cut of any future transfer fee.
Lyon also extended their best wishes to Cumbetti at the end of their statement: "Olympique Lyonnais thanks Sael for his dedication and professionalism during his time with the team and wishes him all the best in Germany."
The 20-year-old Cumbeddi was born in Stansted, a city in north-central France, and holds dual French and Democratic Republic of Congo citizenship. He came through the youth academy of Paris Saint-Germain and made his professional debut for Le Havre in the French Cup on November 13, 2021.
In August 2022, Cumbetti joined Lyon from Le Havre for a transfer fee of €1 million. He played for Lyon for three seasons, making 62 appearances and providing 5 assists.
At the national team level, Cumberdi is one of the best young players in French football: he scored twice in the final of the 2022 European U17 Championship, helping the French U17 national team defeat the Netherlands to win the championship.
Currently, Cumbetti has secured a starting position in the French U21 team. His development potential is widely recognized, and he is considered a strong contender for the right-back position in the future French national team.
