Newcastle United defeated Manchester City 2-1 in the 12th round of the 2025/26 Premier League season after a brace from Harvey Barnes. Eddie Howe said it was difficult to find a way to beat Manchester City, while also praising his team for a brilliant performance.
In the 64th minute of the second half, Guimarães broke through the defense and passed the ball to Harvey Barnes, who fired a low shot into the net, giving Newcastle a 1-0 lead. In the 68th minute, Malmush took a corner kick, and Rajan Scherki's shot was blocked. Diaz then received the ball in the ensuing scramble and fired a shot into the net, leveling the score at 1-1 for Manchester City.
Just two minutes later, Walter Madd headed the ball across the goal, Guimarães headed it towards goal but the ball hit the post, and then Harvey Barnes followed up to score.
Newcastle United ultimately defeated Manchester City 2-1 at St. James' Park. With these three points, Newcastle currently sits in 14th place in the league table with 15 points.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said in an interview, "I am well aware of my record against Manchester City, which is not something I am proud of, and it is really difficult to find a way to beat them."
“Even in this game, the situation was very close. In the Premier League, the difference between winning and losing against them is extremely small, but we were in the right position. I think the players delivered a wonderful performance, full of energy, perseverance and courage, and I am very satisfied with the team’s performance.”
Eddie Howe also said, "We were brave and aggressive in attack, which paid off at times, and of course they punished us for it, so games against them are always full of danger. Fortunately, Nick Pope made a few brilliant saves at crucial moments, and we also seized the opportunity to score."
Furthermore, Harvey Barnes, who helped Newcastle secure the victory, said, "This is a big result for us, especially after a few less-than-ideal games. We really came out firing in the second half, so these three points are significant."
"That's football. The faster you get out of a missed opportunity, the faster you bounce back. So I have to quickly forget the missed chances and look forward."
