Atlético Madrid announced on its official website on Wednesday that the club signed United States international midfielder Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis.

According to Atléti's official statement, Cardoso has signed on a long-term five-year deal with the club which runs until the summer of 2030.

In addition, according to the news brought by American media outlet CBS Sports' resident renowned transfer journalist Ben Jacobs, Atlético Madrid paid a total of €30 million to Betis to sign Cardoso. At the same time, the player's release clause was set at €275 million.

With the announcement of this transfer, it also means that all rumours which claimed that Cardoso will join Tottenham Hotspur this summer have been quashed.

About Johnny Cardoso

The 23-year-old Cardoso was born in Dunville Township, New Jersey, the United States on September 20, 2001. He is 1.82 meters tall and primarily plays as a defensive midfielder. He can also play as an attacking midfielder. He has the nationalities of the United States, Brazil and Italy.

Cardoso played for Avai's youth academy and Criciuma's youth academy when he was a child. He joined the youth academy of the Internacional in 2014 and completed his Internacional first-team debut by coming on as a substitute in September 2019.

During his five-and-a-half-year spell with Internacional, Cardoso attracted the attention of many major clubs in Europe's Big 5 leagues with his outstanding performances.

In January last year, Cardoso joined Real Betis for €6.3 million.

During his one-and-a-half-year spell at Los Verdiblancos, Cardoso played 65 times for the La Liga powerhouse in all competitions, scored 5 goals, assisted 3 times, and reached the UEFA Conference League final with the club.
