Cavaliers official: Garland has successfully undergone big toe injury repair surgery and is expected to be out for 4 to 5 months

The Cleveland Cavaliers announced on Monday that Darius Garland had successfully undergone surgery to repair a broken big toe on his left foot. He is expected to be out for about four to five months and is expected to return to the team and resume basketball before the start of training camp in October.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Nicholas Strasser of Vanderbilt University Medical Center, with Cavaliers team doctors James Rosnek and Bob Anderson participating in the consultation. The Cavaliers said they will update Garland's injury status in due course based on his recovery progress.

However, the Cavaliers' explanation of Garland's injury is slightly different from some U.S. media reports. According to ESPN's Shams Charanie and Brian Windhorst, Garland may miss the early stages of the regular season. TA further pointed out that he may miss the first 10 regular season games.

Garland, 25, plays mainly as a point guard and was selected by the Cavaliers with the fifth pick in the first round in June 2019. He played for the Cavaliers for six seasons, averaging 18.9 points, 2.7 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 1.2 steals per game, with a shooting percentage of 45.3% and a three-point shooting percentage of 38.8%.

Garland also played in 22 playoff games for the Cavaliers, averaging 17.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 1.0 steals per game, with a shooting percentage of 42.8% and a three-point shooting percentage of 34.3%.

In the 2024/25 season that ended not long ago, Garland played a total of 75 regular season games, averaging 20.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 1.2 steals per game, with a career-high shooting percentage of 47.2% and a three-point shooting percentage of 40.1%. He is also regarded as one of the key contributors to the Cavaliers' 64-18 record in the Eastern Conference.

In the playoffs, Garland played only five times due to a worsening toe injury, averaging 18.0 points, 2.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game. With Garland and several other players out due to injuries, the Cavaliers were eventually eliminated by the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
