West Ham United midfielder Andy Owen has successfully completed his first Premier League season with West Ham United. Now he is looking forward to fulfilling another dream by making his Scotland debut in the upcoming friendlies against Iceland and Liechtenstein.
The player received his first call-up to the national team ahead of the UEFA Nations League Group A1 matches against Croatia and Portugal in October 2024. Despite the hard-won opportunity, he still performed well in his debut season at the club, making 11 appearances in total and gradually becoming a new favorite among the fans.
Andy Owen is one of seven players in Steve Clarke's call-up who have yet to play for Scotland at senior level. Owen made his senior international debut for Scotland at U14 level, and has since represented the U17, U19 and U21 teams. If he makes his debut in the friendly against Iceland or Liechtenstein, he will become the seventh West Ham United player to represent Scotland at senior level, following John Dick, Ray Stewart, Frank McAvennie, Christian Daley, Don Hutchison and Robert Snodgrass.
In a year that has been filled with some of the most memorable moments of his career, Andy Owen is looking forward to making his international debut at either Hampden Park in Glasgow or the Rheinpark in Vaduz in what is shaping up to be a life-changing week.
Andy Owen said with a smile: "I am very happy to be selected for the team again. This is undoubtedly a great honor. If someone told me when I was young that I would wear the national team jersey one day, I might not believe it at all. Now I feel very proud to have actually come to this step. If I can make my national team debut, it will be a dream moment."
“I last played for the national team in October last year and it was an amazing debut. It was great to watch the games against Croatia and Portugal from the sidelines, to see top players like Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo and to see first-hand how we prepare for the games. It was also very inspiring to understand and appreciate the level of performance required of Scotland.”
"Look at the current Scotland team, the lineup is strong, every player is playing in the top league, whether it is midfield or other positions, the competition is very fierce. I am very grateful to be a part of this team and I am looking forward to this challenge. It is this high level of competition that can drive me to keep improving and improve my performance on and off the court."
“Looking back on all the hard work and sacrifice I’ve put in, I feel like it’s all paid off, so making my Scotland debut is undoubtedly one of the most important milestones in my career. Playing for my country is the greatest honour of my career and it’s a moment that will always be etched in my heart. Having represented my country at different age groups in the past, I’m eager to give it my all and play for my country once again with the first team.”
Although Andy Owen's appearances at West Ham United in the 2024-25 season may not meet expectations, he still completed 10 Premier League games and 1 English League Cup appearance, which is a big challenge for any player.
It is a matter of immense pride for Andy Owen and, while he has had to remain patient and go through tough times at times, he firmly believes he has proven he can compete at the top level.
Andy Owen added: “The last two or three months haven’t been the easiest for me so I’m very excited to be called up to the Scotland squad. It was a new journey for me when I first joined the West Ham United first team last summer and I gained a lot of valuable experience throughout the season.”
“I think I played pretty well. I would have liked to have played more but every player was competing hard. After the first game you are eager to play more and get more minutes. It was tough to be patient at times but overall I really enjoyed this season.”
