Werder Bremen announced on Wednesday that Scottish striker Oliver Burke will leave the club this summer after his contract expires. He made it clear that morning that he would not accept the club's contract extension plan.
If nothing unexpected happens, Burke's next stop will be to join the Bundesliga powerhouse Union Berlin. Bremen's football director Clemens Fritz explained: "We deeply regret Oliver's decision and originally hoped to keep him. Especially in the recent negotiations, our offer was in line with the player's previous expectations and took into account his outstanding performance in the past few weeks. However, he obviously received a plan that was much higher than our offer in terms of salary level and contract length. With his decision to leave the team, we can no longer adjust the offer."
"In principle, we must take into account both the individual player and the overall team structure when dealing with all contracts, which involves salary, contract length, and judgment of their development potential. Therefore, we cannot and are unwilling to cater to all conditions blindly."
"Despite this, we are convinced that Olli will give his all and dedicate himself to Bremen until the end. We wish him all the best for the future."
According to Bild, Burke will sign a four-year contract with Union Berlin, with an annual salary of 1.8 million euros, higher than the 1.02 million euros he earned at Werder Bremen.
The 28-year-old Burke came from Nottingham Forest's youth training and made his professional debut for the first team in the English League Cup on September 24, 2014. He then played for Bradford City, RB Leipzig, West Bromwich Albion, Celtic, Alaves, Sheffield United, Millwall, Birmingham City and other teams, and finally joined Werder Bremen as a free agent in July 2022.
So far, Burke has played 43 times for Werder Bremen, scoring 8 goals and providing 1 assist. He mainly serves as a center forward in Bremen, but can also play as a right winger or right midfielder when necessary.
