Celtic lost 3-4 to Aberdeen in a penalty shootout and missed the Scottish FA Cup; this defeat not only ended the team's dream of "treble", but also coach Brendan Rodgers' first defeat at Hampden Park. Aberdeen coach Jimmy Tring led the team to win the Scottish Cup for the first time in 35 years.
The match started unusually. Celtic took the lead through an own goal from Alfie Dorrington, but Kasper Schmeichel scored from the spot late in the second half to allow Aberdeen to equalise. This mistake was the turning point in the game. In the end, the two sides tied in regular time and extra time. In the penalty shootout, Aberdeen goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov became the hero, making many saves to help the team win the trophy.
Rogers looked frustrated after the game, but he did not make excuses and admitted that the team should be held responsible for the defeat.
Rogers said: "This is a team that has always given me so much in return, both in terms of sincerity and skills. I have won many games here in the past and also won the final in England. I have played a total of 11 finals. This is the first time I have lost."
"You have to accept that this is part of sport, part of football. As long as we can reflect honestly, we have to admit that today's performance was not good enough."
"No one else needs to take the blame for this loss, the whole team should be held accountable for this."
"At the beginning of the season our goal was to win the league, the League Cup and the FA Cup and we are one game away from achieving that goal. That shows how difficult it is to achieve all this."
Despite losing the game, Rodgers still expressed his understanding for Schmeichel and said that the goalkeeper had taken the initiative to apologize for the mistake.
“He apologised to his team-mates for his mistake but I have to stress that he has been outstanding all season,” added Rodgers.
"It's hard to avoid moments like that. We had one or two more chances after that but we just didn't take them."
"It's just a pity that a mistake happened at that time."
