Southampton right-back Yusei Sugawara has joined Werder Bremen on loan with a buyout clause

Werder Bremen officially announced on Tuesday the loan signing of Japanese right-back Yusuke Sugawara from Southampton until the end of the season. According to multiple sources, the contract includes a buyout clause worth €6 million.
The 25-year-old Sugawara came through the Nagoya Grampus youth academy and made his J.League debut on February 24, 2018. He subsequently played for AZ Alkmaar for five seasons, making 198 appearances, scoring 14 goals and providing 29 assists.
In July 2024, Sugawara transferred to Southampton for 7 million euros. So far, he has played 35 times for Southampton, contributing 1 goal and 1 assist.
Werder Bremen head coach Horst Steffen expressed great anticipation for Sugawara's arrival: "Sugawara has proven his ability at a high level. He is a quick and capable right-back who can also play in other positions on the wing. During our interactions, he has demonstrated a very positive mental attitude and professionalism.
