According to Shams Charania, Jonathan Kuminga has reached a two-year, $48.5 million contract with the Golden State Warriors, with a team option for the second year. This clause will allow the two sides to reopen negotiations before the 2026-27 offseason.
As a restricted free agent, Kuminga's market options were limited. The Golden State Warriors had matching rights, but few teams were able or willing to offer him a contract this offseason, leading to a period of stalled negotiations. Now that the contract has been finalized, Kuminga's roster stability is assured for the upcoming season.
The 22-year-old, 6-foot-8 Kuminga has seen his playing time fluctuate over the past four seasons with the Golden State Warriors. This past season, he averaged 15.3 points per game on a career-low 45.4% shooting percentage.
After Kuminga almost did not play in the first round of the 2025 playoffs due to injuries to his teammates, he got a lot of opportunities in the Western Conference semifinals series against Minnesota Timberwolves, and scored 30 points, 23 points and 26 points in three consecutive games, showing strong offensive firepower.
Since the Golden State Warriors won their seventh championship in 2022, the team has won less than 50 games in three consecutive seasons and has always been eliminated in the conference semifinals. The team is eager to return to the championship race with the growth and stable contribution of Kuminga.
For the Golden State Warriors, this contract not only ensures the retention of their young core but also leaves flexibility for the future. If Kuminga demonstrates sufficient stability and growth over the next two seasons, the team is likely to offer him a longer and larger new contract in the summer of 2026.
