Ajax has announced that England midfielder Jordan Henderson has requested to terminate his contract early. The club has complied with Henderson's request and terminated his contract, which was originally scheduled to expire in June 2026. Henderson will leave the team immediately.

Henderson, 34, joined Ajax on a free transfer from Saudi Arabian club Al Itifak in January 2024. In the one and a half years he played, Henderson played 57 official games for the Ajax first team, making a stable contribution to the team in the Champions League qualifiers and the Eredivisie.

Henderson expressed his deepest gratitude to everyone associated with Ajax for giving me the opportunity to represent this great club during my time in Amsterdam.

"It is an honour to play for Ajax and an honour to captain them. The only regret is that I have not been able to bring more titles to the fans. They deserve another glorious moment and I believe that day will come soon."

Henderson also made special mention of his life with his family in Amsterdam: "The club and this city make us feel at home, and we are forever grateful."

However, Henderson also admitted that the recent tragic events of the death of former teammate Jota and his brother made the farewell at this time particularly heavy. He said: "At this moment, it is not appropriate to say too much."

"I know I still owe the club, my teammates and the fans a more sincere and complete farewell, which I will do when the time is right. Now, I just want to thank Ajax again and everyone who has made me feel special here."
