Thanks to a brace from Harry Kane, defending Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich defeated St. Gillespie's FC 2-0 in the seventh round of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League. The England striker stated that it was an important victory and that he and his teammates were proud to have secured early qualification for the round of 16.
In the 52nd minute of the second half, Olise took a corner kick, and Kane headed it in to give Bayern Munich a 1-0 lead. In the 55th minute, Kane was brought down in the penalty area by the opposing goalkeeper, resulting in a penalty for Bayern Munich. Kane then converted the penalty to extend Bayern Munich's lead to 2-0.
In the 63rd minute, Kim Min-jae fouled an opposing player while defending, resulting in a yellow card and his dismissal. However, Bayern Munich ultimately defeated Saint-Giroud 2-0 at the Allianz Arena. After seven rounds with six wins and one loss, Bayern Munich sits in second place in the standings with 18 points, successfully securing their place in the Champions League Round of 16.
Harry Kane, who helped Bayern Munich secure a crucial victory, said, "This was a very important win. We were significantly better in the second half, but our ball control was a bit loose in the first half, and we lacked energy in defense. At halftime, everyone knew that we needed to bring a higher intensity in the second half, and we certainly did."
“We scored at the right time, and although we were a bit unlucky to get a red card, we still controlled the game despite being down to ten men. Overall, it’s a valuable 3 points. It’s very important to advance to the round of 16, something we couldn’t do last season because of the extremely tight schedule in February, so we’re proud to have qualified early. We have one game left, and we hope to finish as high as possible.”
Furthermore, Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany stated, "Although we received a red card in the second half, we actually played very well. I felt the team significantly improved after halftime and responded positively again. Our performance in the first half wasn't ideal, but the second half was much better. The opponents gave their all in the first half and were very energetic. This isn't just a situation that happens at Bayern Munich; I've had similar experiences playing for other dominant teams."
"Often, the real breakthroughs happen in the second half, and the game isn't always decided in the first half. Of course, we must also admit that we could have played better in the first half; we didn't bring our best."
Kompany also stated, "But at the same time, we cannot ignore the fact that we are currently playing a game almost every two to three days. Under these circumstances, the team is still performing well and winning continuously. We also kept a clean sheet, which is also commendable."
