Liverpool took the lead in the 22nd round of the 2025/26 Premier League season thanks to a first-half goal from Wirtz, but failed to hold on in the second half, ultimately being held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley. German midfielder Wirtz stated that the team should have made better decisions in the attacking third and been more efficient in front of goal.
In the 42nd minute, Ektiq received a pass from his teammate and shot, but it was blocked by Burnley goalkeeper Dubravka. Jones then passed back to Wirtz, who slotted the ball home to give Liverpool a 1-0 lead.
In the 65th minute of the second half, Florentino Luis played a through ball to Marcus Edwards, who followed up and fired a shot into the net, leveling the score at 1-1 for Burnley. In the 77th minute, Kelkez Milos crossed the ball, Van Dijk's header deflected off a defender, and Ekitic then fired a shot into the net, but the linesman ruled it offside, and the goal was disallowed.
Liverpool were ultimately held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley at Anfield. Liverpool currently sit fourth in the league table with 36 points, just one point ahead of fifth-placed Manchester United.
Wirtz, 22, said, "It's frustrating. I think, as others have said, we created a lot of chances that would have decided the game early on, but we didn't capitalize on them, so it's really disappointing."
“There were a few times when our decisions could have been better. Of course, there were also some unfortunate moments, such as Ekitic’s goal being ruled offside. But in any case, we have to do better in front of goal. I don’t think we created a lot of great chances, but in the end we only scored one goal, which is obviously not enough for this game.”
Wirtz continued, "I felt we got into the game from the first half and played well. Even after the opponent equalized, I still felt we were the better team and had better chances, but the ball just wouldn't go in, which was really disappointing."
After a period of honing and adapting, Wirtz has contributed 3 goals and 1 assist for Liverpool in the Premier League so far this season.
When discussing his form, Wirtz said, "I feel great on the pitch, and the understanding between me and my teammates is fantastic. We understand each other better on the field, and I can definitely feel that. This gives me more confidence and makes playing more fun."
Wirtz added, "It feels like a defeat to get nothing. When you have so many shots and so many shots on target, you should score more goals. But some days are like that, when you try everything and end up not scoring. We only got one point, but all I can say is that we will start again in the next game and try to do better."
