Newcastle United announced on Tuesday that German defender Malik Thiaw has signed from AC Milan. He will wear the number 12 jersey and has signed a contract until June 30, 2029.
The 24-year-old Thiau grew up in Schalke's youth training system and made his first-team debut in the 25th round of the Bundesliga on March 7, 2020. He has since played 61 games for Schalke, contributing 3 goals.
In August 2022, Thiau joined AC Milan from Schalke for €9.3 million. To date, he has made 85 appearances for AC Milan, scoring one goal and providing two assists, winning the 2024/25 Italian Super Cup with the team.
Thiaw's contract at AC Milan was originally scheduled to expire in 2027. According to Sky Sports, he will join Newcastle United for a transfer fee of 30 million pounds, plus a floating bonus of up to 4.3 million pounds.
After completing the transfer, Thiau said: "I am extremely excited to be joining a traditional giant. I can't wait to start training and meet my new teammates and the entire staff."
“I am very excited about the vision the coach has presented to me and his plans for my future as an individual and for the club.”
"I think Newcastle United needs no introduction. It's a great club with some fantastic fans. I can't wait to see them at St James' Park."
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe added: "We are very pleased to welcome Malik. He is a player I have admired for a long time and will add real strength to our defence."
"Although Malik is young, he brings valuable Champions League experience, as well as experience in the Bundesliga and Serie A. His signing is a significant asset for us as we return to European competition this season."
