The Polish Football Association (PZPN) officially announced on Wednesday the appointment of Jan Urban as head coach of the national team. He will sign a short-term contract until the end of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

If he leads the team directly to the World Cup, Jan Urban's contract will be automatically extended to July 19, 2026.

Jan Urban, 63, was born in Jaworzno, Poland. As a player, he won three Polish Serie A titles, one Polish Super Cup and one Intertoto Cup with Shakhtar Zabrze. He also played 58 times for Poland, including the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

After retiring in 1998, Urban started his coaching career with Osasuna youth team. He then moved to many Polish teams including Egid, Legia Warsaw, Bytom Polska, Lubin Zaglebi, Osasuna, Lech Poznan, Wroclaw, Shakhtar Zabrze, etc. During this period, he led the team to win the Polish First Division championship, Polish Cup and Polish Super Cup twice. Urban also served as an assistant coach for the Polish national team in 2008, assisting the then head coach Leo Beenhakker.

Regarding Urban's arrival, Polish Football Association President Cezary Kulesa said: "We believe that this selection will help the national team to fully realize its potential. Our goal is to qualify for the 2026 World Cup finals. I wish the coach all the best and assure him that I, the board and all the staff will give him our full support."
