The Houston Rockets announced on Tuesday that they had signed 26-year-old Nigerian basketball player Josh Okogie. According to ESPN reporter Shams Charania, the two sides reached a one-year contract worth $3.1 million.

Josh Okogie was born in Lagos, Nigeria on September 1, 1998, and immigrated to the United States with his family when he was 3 years old. He mainly plays as a forward and was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the 20th pick in the first round in 2018.

After spending four seasons with the Timberwolves, Okogie moved to the Phoenix Suns in 2022. In January of this year, he was traded to the Charlotte Hornets along with three future second-round picks and was waived by them on July 15.

Now, Okogie is about to enter his eighth season. Since entering the league in 2018, he has played 416 games in the regular season, averaging 6.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game, shooting 40.6% from the field and 29.9% from three-point range. The Nigerian has also played in 15 playoff games, averaging 3.7 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game.

According to ESPN statistics, Okogie set career highs in shooting percentage, three-point shooting percentage and effective field goal percentage last season: he played 40 regular season games for the Suns and Hornets, averaging 7.1 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game, also a personal high, with a shooting percentage of 44.1% and a three-point shooting percentage of 34.8%.
