On August 1, the New Orleans Pelicans officially announced that they had signed young guard Bryce McGoverns to a two-way contract. The 22-year-old Nebraska forward will usher in a new chapter in his career and strive to provide more bench depth for the team in the new season.
In the 2022-23 season, he joined the Charlotte Hornets on a two-way contract, splitting time between the team and their D-League affiliate, the Greensboro Swarm. Over the next two seasons, he played a total of 105 regular-season games for the Hornets, averaging 5.2 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game while shooting 41.9% from the field, 33% from three-point range , and 76.4% from the free-throw line , demonstrating both scoring and offensive potential.
In the summer of 2024 , the Hornets waived McGoverns, who promptly signed a two-way contract with the Trail Blazers. However, in the NBA , he appeared in only 13 games, averaging less than three minutes per game, failing to demonstrate his potential. In contrast, he performed impressively in the D-League's Rip City Remix , averaging 29.3 points, 4 rebounds , 3.4 assists, 1.5 steals, and 0.8 blocks in 16 games, shooting 48.7% from the field and 80.6% from the free throw line. Unfortunately, a fractured right rib brought his season to a premature end.
At 6'7 " , McGoverns possesses the size of a swingman with scoring potential. His outside shooting, ball-handling game, and defensive versatility guarantee him a potential NBA career. The Pelicans signed him as both a potential rotation player and a recognition of his performance in the G League.
For the Pelicans, the team has been trying to tap the potential of young players through two-way contracts in recent years, and McGovern is a representative of such signings. His arrival will enrich the Pelicans' guard options and provide the team with more rotation flexibility during the long season.
