Ipswich Town Football Club has officially confirmed that Sam Murthy, the captain who led the team to promotion twice, will leave the team. Since joining in 2021, he has been a key figure in the team's continued progress, leading the team from League One to the Championship and then to the Premier League, and serving as the club's first top-flight campaign in nearly 25 years.
Sam Mursi moved to Kuwait Football Club, opening a new chapter in his career in the Middle East and exploring new life opportunities for himself and his family. During his time at Ipswich, he played 165 games and contributed 11 goals.
This player not only led the team to two promotions, but also won the Ipswich Player of the Year and PFA Champions League Fans' Player of the Year honors in the 2023-24 season with his continued high-level performance. His dedication, leadership and unremitting enthusiasm deeply influenced everyone around him, and his outstanding contributions on and off the field made him one of the most respected captains in the club's history.
Sam Murthy said: "I knew my career would end one day, but I didn't expect that moment to come this summer. There is no doubt that this time is the most exciting of my career and one of the most precious memories of my life. I joined the club in 2021 when it was going through a difficult period, which can be seen from my performance in the first few months."
"But you never gave up on me and always showed me unconditional support and love. My family and I are forever grateful for that. At the end of my first season, the team was only ranked in the middle of the standings, but I will always remember that at that stage, the fans still firmly supported the team and were always positive. Because you witnessed everything we went through. From that moment on, I firmly believed that we would eventually create our own glory together."
“I am incredibly proud to have led this club and have had the privilege of experiencing many unforgettable days and nights. While the back-to-back promotions were unexpected, I will never forget the feeling of seeing how success brought the club together and I am extremely grateful for the experience.”
“Then, in the top flight, our away game against Tottenham Hotspur was special. After all, the club had not been involved in the Premier League for many years and we put in some great performances. I will always remember the performances at home by Manchester United and current world champions Chelsea, who proved that we were more than capable of standing on that stage.”
"The club has given me everything and I must sincerely thank Paul Cook for bringing me to the club and a special thank you to Kieran McKenna who changed the trajectory of all of our careers. Thank you to Kieran McKenna for giving me the opportunity to play in the Premier League and more importantly, reigniting my love for football. I will always remember that."
"This summer, I have had many communications with the club. I know that I can still contribute to the club. Unfortunately, we failed to reach a consensus on the contract extension. This is not the fault of either party, but the norm in football. After the joint efforts and achievements of both parties, I finally parted peacefully with the club in a friendly manner."
"My manager has been a mentor and friend throughout my career, and I am grateful for that. My teammates are a unique and tight-knit group that I will always cherish and maintain. Thank you to everyone who has sacrificed so much and pushed the limits to succeed. A special thank you to this group of extraordinary men, you will always be in my heart."
"Therefore, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the fans who have supported us, as well as my teammates, the head coach, the coaching staff and everyone at the training ground. Over the past few years, everyone has always been tolerant and supportive of me. My family and I will always be grateful for your love and encouragement. I firmly believe that the club will continue to move forward on its journey and achieve even greater success."
