Nottingham Forest announced the unfortunate news its official website on Tuesday that the team's Nigeria international center forward Taiwo Awoniyi fell into a induced coma after surgery for a serious abdominal injury.

According to Nottingham Forest's official statement, Awoniyi's abdominal injury is recovering well after surgery, but because the side effects of anesthetics have not passed, the player is still in induced coma, and his condition is still being closely monitored by doctors and nurses in the intensive care unit.

Forests is also very grateful to all fans, players, clubs, FA and journalists who sent well wishes and enquiries to Awoniyi, and will update player's recovery progress.

In addition, Nottingham Forest also clarified in the statement again about the incident in which its Greek owners Evangelos Marinakis broke into the stadium and allegedly confronted head coach Nuno Espirito Santo.

Nottingham Forest reiterated in a statement that the two had never had an argument at the time, but he was worried that Awoniyi was forced to continue playing despite being seriously injured, and he was dissatisfied with the treatment process, thus vented his anger on the sidelines.

As part of the club's sense of family togetherness, Marinakis never deliberately wanted to break into the stadium, but he was worried about Awoniyi's well-being because the player did not receive the medical treatment he deserved, as such he rushed onto the pitch urgently to care about the player's condition, and he was deeply sorry for the misunderstanding caused by this incident.

A few days ago, Awoniyi fell to the ground in pain after colliding with the opponent's loanee Facundo Buonanotte near the goal post in the match between Nottingham Forest and Leicester City.

Although the team doctors of both sides rushed onto the field to pitch the injuries of the two, Awoniyi once raised his thumb to indicate that he could continue playing, but soon after, he suffered abdominal pain due to severe injuries. He could only stagger on the pitch and was obviously in a state of inconvenience.

During this time, Marinakis suddenly broke onto the pitch and had a brief conversation with Nuno Espirito Santo and Leicester City player Oliver Skipp for a few seconds. When he left the pitch, he kicked the electronic advertising board on the sidelines to vent his anger, causing heated public debate.

When the whistle was blown at the end of the game, Awoniyi once pressed his abdomen and knelt face down on the ground, which made the staff and referees of both sides worried.

Awoniyi, 26, was born in Ilorin, Nigeria on August 12, 1997. He is 1.83 meters tall and plays as a center forward. He has played for Liverpool and Union Berlin previously.

In July 2022, Awoniyi joined Nottingham Forest for £17 million and soon became the team's undisputed first-choice with his high goalscoring efficiency.

Since becoming a member of Forests, Awoniyi has played 85 times for the Premier League dark horse in all competitions, scoring 19 goals and providing 4 assists.
