The Golden State Warriors released a statement on Saturday confirming the waiver of guard Seth Curry, a move seen as a tactical move by the Warriors to circumvent salary and luxury tax restrictions before the start of the regular season.
According to NBA Insider reporter Brett Siegel, if Seth continues to stay on the roster at the start of the regular season, the Warriors' total salary will inevitably exceed the league's second-richest limit. For this reason, the Warriors plan to cut him first and then re-sign him when the salary cap space allows in the week of November 10.
The 35-year-old played for the Charlotte Hornets last season, averaging 6.5 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 0.9 assists in 68 regular-season games while shooting 47.8% from the field and 45.6% from three-point range. He signed an Exhibit 9 training camp contract with the Warriors earlier this month, aiming to bolster their bench.
In addition to the Hornets, Seth has played for numerous teams, including the Memphis Grizzlies, Cleveland Cavaliers, Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings, Dallas Mavericks, Portland Trail Blazers, Philadelphia 76ers, and Brooklyn Nets. As the younger brother of legendary NBA point guard Stephen Curry, he played in 550 regular-season games over his 11-season NBA career, averaging 10.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game while shooting 47.1% from the field and 43.3% from three-point range.
As for the playoffs, Seth has played 41 times so far, averaging 11.6 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. His best playoff performance was reaching the Western Conference Finals with the Trail Blazers in 2019, where he was swept 4-0 by his brother Stephen and the Warriors.
